Fall Paddling Tips
Written by Karen Foster, All Out Adventures
Did you know fall is a favorite time at All Out Adventures to head out kayaking and canoeing? With typically cooler air temperatures, water that’s been warmed all summer, and typically quiet days at the parks and rivers, it’s a lovely time to get out on the water!
A few tips:
Life jackets are required to be worn by canoeists and kayakers 12 years old or younger and by all paddlers between September 15 and May 15. Life jackets should fit snugly with all buckles or zippers fastened.
Pay attention to both the water temperature and the air temperature: you’re generally good to go without a wetsuit if the combined air and water temperatures are 120 or higher. (60’ water + 60’ or higher air temp for example)
Pay attention to the wind speed! Generally, winds below 10mph are most comfortable for beginners.
Go with a buddy or group, and be sure someone else knows your plans. If heading out in the afternoon, carry a waterproof light with you in case you end up returning later than anticipated.
Dress in layers and bring a warm layer so you can adjust as you go.
