February: Love, Birthdays, and the Swipe of Fate

February is a month that celebrates love in all its forms: romantic, platonic, and, of course, our unfaltering relationship with social media. Here at MorningBird Media and beyond, not only are we celebrating Valentine’s Day, but February 4th also marks our favorite social media platform, Facebook’s birthday. The platform that made it the simplest way to remember and celebrate your distant Aunt Betty’s birthday turns 21 this year. While Facebook has evolved from pokes and FarmVille invites to forums, groups, debates, and Marketplace ads, one thing hasn’t changed—it’s unequivocally still connecting people. And sometimes, those connections transform into love stories.
Love in the Age of Algorithms
Let’s talk numbers—because nothing says romance like cold, hard data. Did you know that nearly one in three couples now meet online? According to recent studies, this number has more than tripled in the past decade, proving that swiping right might just be the new “meet-cute.” For context, online dating is now the most common way couples meet, surpassing introductions through friends or at work.
And Facebook? It’s playing its part. While it’s not as flashy as Tinder or Bumble, Facebook Dating has been quietly matchmaking since 2019. The service boasts millions of matches worldwide. Facebook claims that people are matched based on more than just a swipe—it’s about compatibility and mutual interests.
Even Facebook groups have become unexpected matchmaking spaces. From foodie meetups to niche hobby communities, love stories often begin with a simple exchange of comments. Discussing sourdough starter tips is the modern version of locking eyes across a room.
Fun Stats to Melt Your Heart & Make You Click the “Thumbs Up”
Nearly 39% of couples who met online report they wouldn’t have found their partner any other way.
Over half of people say they’ve dated someone they met through social media, not just on a dating app.
Valentine’s Day is the second most popular day of the year to get engaged, right after New Year’s Eve.
Facebook Dating has facilitated millions of matches, even if not all of them went the distance.
The Ultimate Compatibility Quiz
Whether you’ve met your significant other online, in person, or serendipitously, Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to see how well you really know each other. Have your partner answer the questions for you—it’s lighthearted, fun, and might even spark some playful debates.
The Questions:
What’s their go-to comfort food?
Which celebrity would they totally ditch you for?
What’s one of their dream vacation destinations?
How many alarms do they set in the morning?
What’s one of their guilty pleasure TV shows?
What is their dream job or ultimate life accomplishment?
