Wooden Fence Care 101

Article published in Northampton Living
(November 2020)

The continuously changing weather conditions in this area can be extremely harsh on a wooden fence. Your maintenance plan must be geared to combat the problems caused by water absorption and water loss, mildew growth, and discoloration of wood from the sun. But there’s quite a lot you can do for your fence to keep it sturdy and clean.

Initial Maintenance

When you first receive your fence, start by applying a cleaner/brightener with mildewcide. Because your fence is brand new, this step will prevent damage from mildew in the long-term.

You’ll want to apply a topical sealant for surface protection. Don’t use a conventional multi-coat paint or varnish. Avoid having to sand, scrape, and repaint the fence by using a pigmented or clear outdoor wood sealer. These sealers allow moisture to leave the wood. Make sure your sealer of choice contains a UV stabilizer to slow the discoloration process. You may want to cover or protect surrounding plants before applying any sealants. Always follow the manufacturer’s advice.

First Year Maintenance

Should be completed by you within 90 days of the fence installation. Reapply cleaner/brightener as well as the outdoor wood sealant. This will keep your fence looking fresh.

Future Periodic Preventative Maintenance

It may be necessary to reapply the cleaner/brightener depending on your fence’s sun exposure, foliage covering, etc. If you decide to wait two or more years to perform your next cleaning/brightening you may want to use a power washer. Be sure it also contains mildewcide. After every cleaning, reapply an outdoor wood sealer that contains both a water-repellent and a UV stabilizer.
